REFLECTION ON THE READINGS

13TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

  1. 2 Kings 4.8-12a, 14-16

Do I ever invite a stranger to share a meal or offer a room to someone I don’t know well? In the Old Testament strangers were considered possible messengers of God. How many prophets and holy people have I welcomed? How many might I have missed?

Psalm 89: “Forever I will sing of your steadfast love, O Lord.”

  1. Second Reading Romans 6.3-4, 8-11

Do I understand my Baptism as Christian as a real entry point into the Way of Christ? Am I ready to walk that Way through death, to resurrection to new life? Is death to sin and being alive to God manifest in my life? Is it time for more dedicated commitment?

Alleluia! “You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation. Praise God who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.”

  1. Gospel Reading Matthew 10.37-42

Jesus sets a high bar for “worthiness”. Have I given up on him because I love my family a lot, or because I sometimes want to drop the cross of life? Is unworthiness a barrier to God’s love? Must I strive towards goals I have imposed on God, or can I let go, to meet and welcome Jesus in others?
