REFLECTION ON THE READINGS
BAPTISM OF THE LORD
1. First Reading Isaiah 42.1-4, 6-7
Is the quiet, gentle manner of Isaiah’s suffering servant too passive? Will he be able to bring justice, or will he be destroyed? Do I have a clear vision of the work God has called me to do? Do I need his help to persevere?
Psalm 29: “The Lord will bless his people with peace.”
2. Second Reading Acts 10.34-38
What is most important for a person to be acceptable to God? How does the gift of the Holy Spirit given in Baptism assist us? What responsibilities go with having “God with us”?
Alleluia! “The heavens were opened and the Father’s voice was heard: this is my Son, the beloved; listen to him!”
3. Gospel Reading Matthew 3.13-17
Jesus’ baptism by John suggested he had sinned: why did Jesus need to be baptized “to fulfill all righteousness”? What does the Baptism tell me about the Son of God and Son of Man? Is God pleased by me?
