REFLECTION ON THE READINGS
THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
- First Reading Exodus 17.3-7
Who is the main target of my complaints? Do I grumble about those above me, or those in my care? Or both? Is God in the picture? Is my discontent centered entirely on physical needs or is spiritual thirst a factor?
Psalm 95: “O that today you would listen to the voice of the Lord. Do not harden your hearts!”
- Second Reading Romans 5.1-2, 5-8
Faith is an awesome gift. What is the state of my faith? Do I try to cultivate it? Am I aware of the grace God has given me and the hope for eternal life? How has the unmerited gift of God’s love affected the way I live?
Praise to you, Lord, king of eternal glory! “Lord, you are truly the Saviour of the world; give me living water, that I may never be thirsty.”
- Gospel Reading John 4.5-42
What barriers prevent me from letting Christ approach? Have externals (customs, traditions, religious practice) kept me away? Has he asked me for a drink? Has he helped me realize my need for his living water? Has he led me to take on my part in God’s plan?

He suggests Mass on TV or Internet and the prayer of spiritual Communion (at the entrance) instead. The faithful are strongly advised to receive Holy Communion on the hand (or wait until all others have received); not to use holy water fonts and avoid physical or close contact (eg. handshakes at Kiss of Peace).
