REFLECTION ON THE READINGS
1. First Reading Job 38.1-4, 8-11
Have there been times when I felt like Job, my trust in God battered by difficulties and discouragement? Did I question God: longing, like Job, for some understanding of the situation? How did God reply? How often has God reminded me, as he did Job, that his plans are far beyond my understanding? How can I avoid telling God what to do and ensure that my heart is open to his counsel in prayer?
Psalm 107: “Give thanks to the Lord; his steadfast love endures forever.”
2. Second Reading 2 Corinthians 5.14-17
In recent days, what motivations have inspired my efforts in different spheres of my life (e.g. home, work, social, religious)? Were there times when the love of Christ urged me on? Times when I was living more for Christ than for myself? What might have been different if I had let Christ be at the center at other times? What steps can I take to grow as a “new creation” who sees everyone and everything in a new way, with the eyes of the risen Christ?
“Alleluia. A great Prophet has risen among us; God has looked favourably on his people. Alleluia.”
3. Gospel Reading Mark 4.35-41
The disciples had Jesus beside them, but they feared that they would perish until he calmed the storm. At similar times in my life, how would I have answered Jesus: “Why are you afraid? Have you no faith?” Will it be any different next time? How have I experienced the Holy Spirit’s gift of awe and wonder (fear of the Lord) and what difference has it made?
