REFLECTION ON THE READINGS

1. First Reading Jeremiah 23.1-6

Who are/were the most memorable shepherds in my life? Why? What have I learned, good and bad, from their examples? Who are the sheep in my care, and how am I doing in attending to them, according to God’s message to Jeremiah? Those shepherds in public positions have especially difficult roles. What is most needed now, and how can we support and assist them in their leadership?

Psalm 23: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”

2. Second Ephesians 2.13-18

Jewish and gentile Christians had markedly different backgrounds that shaped their Christian understanding and practice. Ephesians emphasizes unity and peace in Christ. What sources of division between Christians, or within the Catholic Church, distress me the most? How might Christ see them from his perspective, from the Cross? How can I open my heart to reconciliation and to the peace of Christ?

Alleluia! My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord; I know them, and they follow me.”

3. Gospel Reading Mark 6.30-34

“Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while”. When have I been sustained by excitement for a mission, especially work for the Lord? What happens if it goes on with no break? When have I failed to give those shepherding in parish programs an opportunity to “rest a while”? While the Apostles rested, Jesus taught the people himself. With Jesus as Shepherd and Teacher, what more could I do?
