REFLECTION ON THE READINGS

1. First Reading Ecclesiastes 1.2; 2.21-23

“What does a person get from all their toil and strain?” What do I expect from the time and effort I expend for my family; for my work; for my community; for the church; for myself? How do trials and suffering influence my mindset? How do I understand the “vanity” bemoaned in this text?

Psalm 90: “Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations.”

2. Second Reading - Colossians 3.1-5, 9-11

What earthly temptations and vices are slowing the transformation to my new self in God’s image? How can I try to overcome the barriers that hinder me from living the truth that “Christ is all and in all”?

“Alleluia! Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven!”

3. Gospel Reading - Luke 12.13-21

When have I asked Jesus to tell my brother or sister something, and for whose benefit? What physical, emotional and spiritual goods am I trying to store up for my own enjoyment or security? Reflecting on what might be important in my last hours of life, how can I be more “rich toward God” now?
