REFLECTION ON THE READINGS

1. First Reading Joshua 24.1-2a, 15-17, 18b

As the people of Israel stood before God, Joshua gave them a choice – or was it a challenge? What is the choice/challenge faced by God’s people today? What do I choose? How have previous choices affected my life? What tempts me to serve what is “not God”? What influenced my current choice? What do I want to work on or re-evaluate?

Psalm 34: “Taste and see that the Lord is good.”

2. Second Reading Ephesians 4.32-5.1-2, 21-32

“Be imitators of God”. “Live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us”. “Be subject to one another”. Such tall orders! But we are to do it “as beloved children”, and out of reverence for Christ. What do children show me about living in love? How does the relationship of Christ and the Church compare to my marriage? How do my spouse and I show reverence and subjection to the other in daily life? How do we express our love? Is our marriage a sign of Christ for the world?

Alleluia! Your words, Lord, are spirit and life; you have the words of eternal life.”

3. Gospel Reading John 6.53, 60-69

John 6.53, 60-69

“Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.” What is my reaction to this teaching? Are Jesus’ words and the teaching of the Church enough for me? What is needed to have faith? Jesus asks: “Do you also wish to go away?” Why did Peter stay? How will I answer Jesus?
