First Reading: Deuteronomy 4.1-2, 6-8
Why do I observe the commandments? How does my observance of the commandments teach others about morality and justice, even challenging societal norms? What does it show them about God and his relationship with humankind?
Psalm 15: “O Lord, who may abide in your tent?”
Second Reading: James 1.17-18, 21-22, 27
“Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” As “a kind of first fruit of [God’s] creatures” through Baptism, how do I live out my religion: caring for others and for my soul? What could I include in an autumn clean-up, or tune-up?
“Alleluia! The Father gave us birth by the word of truth, that we would become first fruits of his creation Alleluia.”
Gospel: Mark 7.1-8, 14-15, 21-23
What outward evidence of uncleanliness really bothers me? What outward signs do I associate with sinfulness? When have my initial impressions been off-base? How can I grow in purity of heart, as Jesus urges? What externals might I also address, to more effectively witness to Christ?
