REFLECTION ON THE READINGS

1. First Reading Isaiah 35.4-7

“Say to those who are of fearful heart, ‘Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God…He will come and save you.’” Is this easier to say to others than to myself? When has God calmed my fear? What thoughts or situations still make me afraid? Why? What happens if I focus on trusting that God is with me?

Psalm 146: “The Lord opens the eyes of the blind and lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous and watches over the strangers.”

2. Second Reading James 2.1-5

Does James probe my conscience: “My brothers and sisters, do you with your acts of favouritism really believe in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ?” What distinctions do I tend to make between people? How does that affect my interactions with them? “Poverty” has many forms. How does my perspective of “the poor in the world” compare to God’s? What have I learned about God’s kingdom from people who are in some way less privileged than me?

Alleluia! Jesus proclaimed the good news of the kingdom and cured every sickness among the people.”

3. Gospel Reading Mark 7.31-37

Mark 7.31-37

Who can I bring to Jesus for healing? What healing do I need myself? Are my ears open to our Triune God? Is my tongue free to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with the world? Where is God sending me?
