REFLECTION ON THE READINGS

1. First Reading Isaiah 50.5-9

When have I had to persevere, like Isaiah? What situations are beating me down now? Who are the adversaries? How is God telling me to react, and how is it going? How do my faith and commitment to God sustain me in such tough times? What support do I need?

Psalm 116: “I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.”

2. Second Reading James 2.14-18

What are some works of people that show their faith? What might someone who has faith but no works be like? What is the relationship of faith and works in my life? How have the works I undertake and my spiritual orientation toward them changed during my journey of faith?

Alleluia! May I never boast of anything except the Cross of the Lord, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.”

3. Gospel Reading Mark 8.27-35

If I had been Peter, and just affirmed that Jesus was the Christ, the Anointed One, the long-awaited Messiah, how would I have reacted when Jesus described his upcoming death and resurrection?

How do I explain Jesus to others? How do I feel about the necessity of the Cross – for Jesus and for myself? Do I want to be Christ’s follower? What blessings and challenges have I received as his disciple?
