REFLECTION ON THE READINGS

1. First Reading Isaiah 53.10-11

For Christians, Jesus is the suffering servant of Isaiah 53. Our suffering is mysteriously linked to his (eg. 2 Cor 4.11, Phil 3.9-11, Col 1.24). As I reflect on a time of personal pain or suffering, what was God’s will? How did I see it then, and what insights do I have now? What helped me through the trial? Drawing from my experience, how can I help others who are “crushed with pain” physically, emotionally or spiritually? It’s easily said, but what does it mean, to “offer it up for Christ”?

Psalm 33: “Let your love be upon us, Lord, even as we hope in you.”

2. Second Reading Hebrews 4.14-16

How do I find strength and encouragement in times of weakness or temptation? When has my faith been tested, and what did I do? How will I “approach the throne of grace” for help with my current needs?

Alleluia! The Son of Man came to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

3. Gospel Reading Mark 10.35 - 45

Even after Jesus’ third prediction of his passion, the apostles are still thinking of their own glory. How do I feel about drinking Jesus’ cup of suffering? How does my post-baptismal life resemble Christ’s so far? How is he inviting me to change, to grow as a “slave of all”?
