REFLECTION ON THE READINGS

1. First Reading - Isaiah 11.1-10

“On that day”, described by Isaiah, what do I envision? How can I be more like Jesus, who fulfills the prophecy? In our day, where do I see hurtfulness and destruction? What countermeasures do the beautiful images suggest, to further peace and wellbeing?

Psalm 72: “In his days may righteousness flourish, and peace abound forever.”

2. Second Reading Romans 3.1-12

Gentiles came to know God in the welcome and worship of the Christian community. How might we live in greater harmony as a parish, glorifying God together? How might we invite and welcome others to encounter the mercy, encouragement and hope found only in God?

“Alleluia! “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths: all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”

3. Gospel Reading – Matthew 3.1-12

John’s baptism of repentance was but a first step to God’s greater promise. What do I have to repent or reconcile with God and others? How can I let down my barriers, to fully receive Christ at his coming and bear fruit beyond my imagining?
