REFLECTION ON THE READINGS

“Let the hearts that seek the Lord rejoice; turn to the Lord and his strength; constantly seek his face.”

1. First Reading - Sirach 35.15-17, 20-22

“[The Lord] will not show partiality to the poor but he will listen to the prayer of one who is wronged.” Our society is becoming ever more aware of past injustice: what can we learn from God’s way of responding? How should I pray and act about the injustices that most upset me? When does my own sense of entitlement override humility in service or prayer, and how can I guard against it?

Psalm 34: “The poor one called and the Lord heard”

2. Second Reading 2 Timothy 4.6-8, 16-18

When have I felt so alone and overwhelmed that I had only God’s strength? How did that affect my faith? How much of the writer’s experience would I be willing to undergo, for “the crown of righteousness”?

“Alleluia! In Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us.”

3. Gospel Reading – Luke 18.9-14

Do I consider myself righteous? What thoughts and opinions do I hold that sound like the Pharisee’s thanksgiving prayer? What are my imperfections? How should I pray, truly naked before God [Genesis 2.9-10]?

PARISH NEWS

*This week, there is a second collection for Evangelization of Nations.  All donations go towards helping the “Society for the Propagation of the Faith” assist missionary bishops and dioceses throughout the world.  Thank you for your generosity and ongoing financial support.

*Next weekend, October 29 and 30, Michael from Bethlehem will be here in our parish selling religious olive wood articles. These articles are hand crafted by Christians in the Holy Land who are seeking your support to stay rooted in the Land of Christ as their numbers have dropped to less than 1%. Your purchase helps in preserving a local cultural heritage which is in danger of being lost as a more Christians feel pressured to leave their homeland for economic and political reasons. These religious articles can be used as gifts for Christmas, Easter, Baptism, and many other Christian occasions.

*Attention all male parishioners ages 30 year and up - Do you think you God is calling you to serve as a Permanent Deacon in the Archdiocese of Vancouver?  Deacons are ordained not to the priesthood but for service.  Deacons are official teachers of the Gospel, they preside at celebrations of baptism, funerals, matrimony, and they visit the infirm, imprisoned, and needy.  If you think God may be calling you to discern the vocation of permanent deacon, the process begins by attending an information session on Saturday, November 5 at Christ the Redeemer Parish.  More information can be found on the posters in the Church entrance and on our parish website.

*This year, for the Feast of the Holy Family, our parish is planning to celebrate a special Mass in honor of married couples in our parish.  Married couples who are celebrating milestone anniversaries of 25, 50, 60 and 70 years are invited to attend and receive a special blessing during this Mass.  Please contact the parish office for more information and to register for this Mass.  The deadline to register is Monday, October 31st.

*Our Parish is always looking for volunteers who are willing to donate their time and talents in various areas such as:  sacristans, readers, altar servers, choir members, gift bearers, parking lot attendants and so much more. Please speak with the Mass coordinator if you are able to help or would like more information.
