REFLECTION ON THE READINGS

“He fed them with the finest wheat and satisfied them with honey from the rock.”

1. First Reading Proverbs Genesis 14.18-20

What aspects of the encounter between Abraham and the high priest Melchizedek do we find in the Mass? How do the Mass and the priest celebrant differ from this foreshadowing event?

Psalm 110: “You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek”

2. Second Reading - 1 Corinthians 11.23-26

How does this first Eucharist that Jesus celebrated with his apostles inspire my reception of the Eucharist? What teachings on the Eucharist do I have in mind when I receive Holy Communion?

Sequence: What does the Sequence remind us about the Eucharist, that is not in the scripture readings?

“Alleluia! I am the living bread of heaven, says the Lords; whoever eats of this bread will live forever.

3. Gospel Reading - Luke 9.11b-17

What personal experiences call to mind the miraculous feeding of the crowd or other Eucharistic miracles? How has Jesus taught me, healed me and fed me throughout my life? How am I participating in the ongoing activity of the Church to carry out Jesus’ mission in our time? As a parish, how can we more fully live our Eucharist faith?
