REFLECTION ON THE READINGS

“Behold, the Lord, the Mighty One, has come; and kingship is in his grasp, and power and dominion.”

1. First Reading - Isaiah 60.1 - 6

“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you!” The birth of Jesus, our Lord, fulfills Isaiah’s prophecy, but what is still to come? What are the implications for my Christian life?

Psalm 72: “Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.”

2. Second Reading - Ephesians 3.2 – 3a, 5 - 6

The Spirit of God illuminated the mysteries of revelation for the apostles. What has their understanding that Gentiles are “fellow heirs, members of the same body and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the Gospel” meant for the Church? How do we live that gift in the Church today?

“Alleluia! We observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay homage to the Lord.”

3. Gospel Reading - Matthew 2.1 - 12

“Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews?”, or “the ruler who is to shepherd [God’s] people Israel”? Who did the wise men see in the infant Jesus, born in the lowly stable at Bethlehem? What did Herod see? Why do I seek Jesus? Why is it important to me to worship at the celebration of his birth?
