REFLECTION ON THE READINGS

1. First Reading 1 Kings 19.6b, 19-21

How did Elisha’s decision to say “Yes” to God’s prophetic call and follow Elijah, impact on him and his family? How did God’s call and my response bring me to the vocation I am living, or the next step I am contemplating? What hesitations have I had and what closure is/was needed to move on

Psalm 16: “You are my chosen portion. O Lord”

2. Second Reading - Galatians 5.1,13-18

What might “freedom” look like in my life? Considering the various constraints to my freedom, what restricts my freedom to serve others with love, and what simply restricts opportunities for self-indulgence? How do my experiences of being led by the Spirit compare to St. Paul’s understanding?

“Alleluia! Speak, O Lord, for your servant is listening; you have the words of eternal life.

3. Gospel Reading - Luke 9.51-62

As Jesus focuses on the Cross ahead, what standards does he set for would-be disciples? How do I deal with those who ignore or reject him? How has the inevitable reality of suffering impacted my commitment to being his disciple? What is Jesus asking of me right now? What is delaying me or holding me back from the journey with him to Jerusalem?
