REFLECTION ON THE READINGS

1. First Reading Ezekiel 2.3-5

How might God describe our time and the present-day children of his Church? Who are today’s Prophets, and what is God saying through them? The Spirit calls each of us to action: what message have I heard?

Psalm 123: “Our eyes look to the Lord, until he has mercy upon us.”

2. Second 2 Corinthians 12.7-10

What was St. Paul’s problem? Am I sometimes too elated about my relationship with God? What thorns in the flesh or tormenters keep me humble? When do I feel closer to God: in good times or bad, in strength or in weakness? Have I ever felt so weak that only Christ sustained me? What are my current struggles and fears, and how can I grow in accepting them?

Alleluia! The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; he has sent me to bring good news to the poor.”

3. Gospel Reading Mark 6.1-6

Public opinion today is as fickle as Jesus’ hometown crowd. Why did the crowd “take offence” at Jesus? Was it his teaching? His wisdom? His deeds of power? When have I recently “taken offence” at something? What factors contributed? Might I dismiss a Prophet because of his/her background, or reject a message because it seemed too challenging? How did Jesus respond to rejection? How can I start getting ready for what God may ask me to do?
