19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: First Kings 19:9, 11-13

Where / when have I had a special personal encounter with the Lord? How did I recognize his presence? How does the Lord usually invite us to be with him? How have my encounters with the Lord borne fruit?

Psalm 85: “Show us your steadfast love, O Lord, and grant us your salvation.”

Second Reading: Romans 9:1-5

St. Paul was in anguish for the salvation of his own people, who were God’s chosen people and the earthly forefathers of Christ. How has my faith journey been influenced by my ancestors and family members? What prayers do I have for individual family members and their relationship to God?

“Alleluia. I wait for the Lord; I hope in his word Alleluia.”

Gospel: Matthew 14:22-33

When have I felt that I was alone, battling the waves with no help from God? How were my fears and stresses eventually calmed? When has Jesus enabled me to do what seemed impossible - to “walk on water” - or reached out to save me from doubts? How have these experiences affected my life? What is holding me back from putting myself in his hands now?
