REFLECTION ON THE READINGS

1. First Reading 1 Kings 19.4-8

Elijah was weary and depressed from a seemingly unfruitful prophetic mission, unremitting opposition and threats to his life. When have I been so burnt out in some aspect of life (eg. work, study, prayer etc.), that it seemed almost impossible to continue? How did the Lord or his Angels intervene? What did I learn through the experience, and what might help others in their struggles?

Psalm 34: “Taste and see that the Lord is good.”

2. Second Reading Ephesians 4.30 – 5.2

“Brothers and sisters: Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption.” How have my interactions with others changed with the assistance of the Holy Spirit? What is needed to live more and more as a child of God - in love, as Christ loved us? How is the Holy Spirit guiding me in holiness, to becoming “a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God”?

Alleluia! I am the living bread that came down from heaven, says the Lord; whoever eats of this bread will live for ever.”

3. Gospel Reading John 6.41-51

What are the strengths and weaknesses of my faith? What can I say with conviction about Jesus? God the Father? Eternal life? The Eucharist? How did my faith evolve to include Jesus’ life on earth, belief that Jesus is both God and man and belief in the Creed and Church teaching? What hope does this Gospel offer me and others on the journey of faith?
