First Reading: Sirach 27.30-28.7

“Anger and wrath, these are abominations, yet a sinner holds on to them.” As Sirach’s words pierce my heart, what lingering resentments are exposed? What value will they retain when I face death? How can I grow in love through the commandments and by holding God’s example in my heart?

Psalm 103: “The Lord is merciful and gracious; slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love.”

Second Reading: Romans 14.7-9

“Whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.” Really? What aspects of my life do I consider to be mine, or at least not obviously the Lord’s? In what ways do I belong to the Lord? What does Christ’s human life, completely in union with his divine nature, teach me about being the Lord’s?

Alleluia! I give you a new commandment: love one another just as I have loved you. Alleluia.”

Gospel: Matthew 18.21-35

“Forgive seventy-seven times.” Am I counting? When I have been in trouble through some failing, have I been tempted to deflect blame onto other people or circumstances? What happened to everyone involved? What are my most memorable experiences of God’s mercy? How have they affected me in seeking forgiveness and forgiving others?
