REFLECTION ON THE READINGS

1. First Reading - Exodus 32.7-11, 13-14

How does the situation of the Israelites compare to our own time? How does it affect me when people turn away from God, and how do I interact with them, and with God in their behalf? When have I experienced God’s mercy towards myself or someone else?

Psalm 51: “I will get up and go to my Father.”

2. Second Reading 1 Timothy 1.12-17

St. Paul and many other saints had a profound sense of their sinfulness and God’s mercy toward them. When have I been most aware of my sinfulness or unworthiness and most appreciative of God’s mercy? How have those experiences affected my relationships to God and to others?

“Alleluia! In Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us.”

3. Gospel Reading - Luke 15.1-32

What is so precious to me that I would leave everything to search for it if it were lost? How does that help me understand Jesus’ care for sinners? How can I receive Jesus’ parables of loving persistence and apply them in my life, to enlighten the shadows of grief, loss and uncertainty with hope? What homecomings should we already be celebrating?
