REFLECTION ON THE READINGS

1. First Reading Deuteronomy 6.2-6

“May you and your children and your children’s children fear the Lord your God all the days of your life; and keep all his decrees and his commandments that I am commanding you, so that your days may be long.” What did I learn through the stories and actions of my parents and grandparents about God and about religious practice? How did they influence the development of my current relationship to God? How am I encouraging my children and grandchildren to grow in love of God?

Psalm 18: “I love you, O Lord, my strength.”

2. Second Reading Hebrews 7.23-28

In contrast to the human weaknesses of priests of the old covenant, in Christ we are blessed with a perfect “high priest” whose self-offering promises salvation through all time. What are my expectations for bishops and priests? When these expectations are exceeded or disappointed, how does it affect my attitude to Christ and his Church?

Alleluia! Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him.”

3. Gospel Reading Mark 12.28-34

“Which commandment is the first of all?” What challenges do I have in interpreting the commandments? How do I use Jesus’ summary of the commandments to guide my decisions in daily life? When do I have the greatest difficulty in prioritizing love of God and love of neighbour over other considerations?
