Reflections on the Readings:

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

  1. First Reading Jonah 3.1-5, 10
When have I been faced with an overwhelming task? How did God interact with me on that mission? How have my responses to God compare with Jonah’s in Jonah chapters 1-3? How have my responses compared to the Ninevites? What is God asking of me now? What help do I need? Psalm 40: “Lord, make me know your ways.”

Psalm 40: “Lord, make me know your ways.”

  1. Second Reading 1 Corinthians 7.29-31
Is St. Paul correct, that “the appointed time has grown short”, and “the present form of this world is passing away”? What aspects of my present life do I hold most dear? My closest relationships? Sorrows and joys or other emotions or memories? Possessions? Positions? How can one detach while remaining engaged with the world? What are the risks to living as St. Paul describes? To continuing as I am? Where do I begin?

“Alleluia! The kingdom of God has come near: repent and believe the good news! Alleluia.”

  1. Gospel Reading Mark 1.14-20
Is Jesus’ message still needed? Is it still being proclaimed? Whose responsibility is it to speak it out? How do I live my baptismal call? Are we called to be like the apostles? What is holding me back?
