First Reading: Job 7.1-4, 6-7

“Does not the human being have a hard service on earth…?”  Job’s life changed dramatically as he lost possessions, family and health. What are my challenges? What helps sustain my hope? How might people discouraged by suffering, emptiness or the inevitability of death find hope?

Psalm 147: “Sing praises to the Lord, who heals the broken-hearted.”

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 9.16-19, 22-23

St. Paul comments on underlying motivations for service. How am I rewarded for volunteering - for example: loving the work, meeting people, recognition, thanks, praise…? If I were motivated solely by obedience to God for the sake of the Gospel, how might my involvement change?

“Alleluia!  Christ took our infirmities, and bore our diseases.” Alleluia.”

Gospel : Mark 1.29-39

How did Jesus find strength and guidance for his work on earth? What factors compromise my ability to commit to service right now? What types of service am I considering?

Govern everything by your wisdom, O Lord, so that my soul may always be serving you in the way you will and not as I choose. Let me die to myself so that I may serve you; let me live to you who are life itself. St. Teresa of Avila
