REFLECTION ON THE READINGS
Men of Galilee, why gaze in wonder at the heavens? This Jesus whom you saw ascending into heaven will return as you saw him go. Alleluia!
1. First Reading Acts 1.1-11
If I were present at Jesus’ permanent departure after the spiritual roller coaster of giving up everything to follow him, his devastating crucifixion, the astounding joy of his Resurrection and the last 40 days of loving accompaniment, what would I have remembered? What has my own journey with Jesus been like? As we commemorate his Ascension in 2022, what message sticks with me?
Psalm 47: “God has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.”
2. Second Reading - Ephesians 1.17-23
Our minds learn truths of faith, but faith requires enlightenment of “the eyes of the heart”. How have God’s gifts of wisdom and revelation deepened my understanding of God, Jesus and the way to salvation? What obscurity or pitfalls have I encountered?
“Alleluia! Go, make disciples of all nations; I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
3. Gospel Reading - Luke 24.44-53
What does it mean to proclaim repentance and forgiveness of sins in Jesus’ name? The disciples were joyful when Jesus left. As Jesus’ witness, what joy do I share?
